PRista Prep: Network to Increase your Networth

While most people know the value of networking, many don't know how to actually network. When I first moved to NYC I quickly learned the networking events could very well be a scene from the hunger games. The photo above is from last August at the time I was working at Horizon Media. I absolutely hated the job and I knew in fact my days were limited at that point. I have attended a ton of networking events, but with this one I went in with the sole focus to just connect with people in my field. Looking back I met my now mentor there. Not only does she provide me with guidance in this industry she makes sure I learn the in and outs by working beside her at events like the Power 105 festival, Love in the City premiere, Love thy Neighbor premiere, and many more. At this event I was also able to connect with other PRistas that I now have friendships with. For instance I was shocked when my friend that I met at this event  invited me to her company's superbowl party. Let's just say I was completely star struck by the pop up concert by the legendary Nas that night. We live in a time where it's all about who you know. So let me let you in on how to actually network.

Pre-Planning:
When you find a networking event that catches your attention be sure to do your homework to ensure that you can put your best foot forward. Most networking events promote their panelist so be sure to do your research. Research entails discovering which guest of honor you most align with.  Visit their LinkedIn pages to learn more about their background and  use that as talking points during the initial conversation. Be sure to follow up on their most recent accomplishments and accolades. Also you need to be sure that your social media profiles are updated.

During the event:
Try to go to networking events alone so you will be forced out of a comfort zone. Be willing to sit next to someone you do not know.  Most people all go to networking events to find a person that will plug them in a job. Your focus in networking events should be to build connections and through those organic connections opportunities will arise. When I strike up conversation I tend to go beyond just industry talk. After all while most people love what they do it's still work and they enjoy other things besides their 9-5. When collecting business cards turn them over and write down one interesting fact that you learned about the person to use in your follow up email.

Follow Up Emails:

So you had an amazing night and made some great connections. The next step is the most vital to building a relationship with the people you have met. You have 24 hours to follow up with someone after your initial encounter. The eager beaver in me drafts emails the night before and sends them off them off first thing in the morning so it can be at the top of their inbox. Use creative subject lines, add in a personal detail they may have shared with you, and end with a plan to continue the budding relationship

Subject Line: PRistas Unite?

Hello Kamelah,

It was great to meet you at the I Don't Do Clubs Actual Networking Event last night. It was inspiring to hear your story of how you embarked on your true calling without knowing what your journey entailed.
As I continue to navigate through the PR realm I would appreciate learning more about all that you do and the obstacles you have had to overcome. Would you be willing to meet for lunch or coffee?

It was a pleasure meeting you. Have a great Tuesday!
Sincerely,

 Kolleh

Those who you happened to miss:

Subject: Another Go Around?

Hello Trizonna,
It was great seeing you at the I Don't Do Clubs Actual Networking Event last night. It's always refreshing mingling with individuals that have made strides in the Communications industry.
As a natural chatter box I didn’t get a chance to speak with you. I would appreciate learning more about all that you do at The Steve Harvey Show and the obstacles you have had to overcome. Would you be willing to meet for lunch or coffee?
Hope to hear from you soon. Have a great Tuesday!
Sincerely,

Tomeka Kolleh
